PUVA

PUVA treatment is time-consuming, as it involves two to five sessions a week, and no results can be expected before at least 20 sesssions. It is a pleasant treatment, popular with patients, as it involves exposure to long-wave ultraviolet light.

The patient has to take a sensitizing drug - psoralens - before the sessions and, as skin is sensitive to sunshine for a day or so afterwards, must be careful to keep out of direct sunlight for a short time. Dr Sylvia Marston runs a Harley Street PUVA clinic. She says: "It is very much a second-line treatment, mainly for someone who has plenty of time to spare and is happy with just temporary regrowth. It is common for the regrown hair to disappear when treatment stops. There is also controversy about possible side-effects, such as skin problems and eye trouble".
