Indian Head Massage (Champissage)
This can hardly be hailed as a new idea in treatment, since it began over a thousand years ago as a therapy to help young Indian women to keep their long hair strong and shining. It is said to improve the texture, strength and growth of the hair.
Fifty-year-old Bombay-born osteopath Karendra Mehta has been totally blind since he was a year old and has developed a uniquely fine-tuned sense of touch. Twenty years ago in India he researched champissage, and has now developed his own special massage combining the traditional Indian method and his own experience as an osteopath. He is now principal of the London Centre of Indian Champissage, where therapists are trained. His head massage therapists are now working in hair and beauty salons throughout the UK.
His treatment is a hands-on therapy where the patient is treated fully dressed and sitting normally. Oils or creams are used if the patient is being treated for hair thinning, but for other disorders this treatment is carried out without oil.
